Rebuilding the Canopy Games Website: A Massive Undertaking

Over the past few weeks, we’ve been deep in the process of rebuilding the entire Canopy Games website. This isn’t just a facelift—it’s a full-scale migration, reorganisation, and rethink of how we deliver our courses, structure our content, and support our community.

The Challenge of Scale

The sheer scale of it has been one of the biggest challenges. We’re not just copying content over—we’re recreating course layouts, rebuilding lesson structures, migrating assets, and making sure everything works in a brand-new system. It’s a big job, and like many large projects, things crop up along the way that we didn’t expect. There are moving parts we didn’t anticipate until we were already knee-deep.

Design, Theming, and Styling

One of the more time-consuming aspects has been dealing with theming. The platform we’re moving to needed a lot of custom CSS to get things looking and working the way we want. I’ve spent more time than I care to admit wrangling layout quirks, adjusting styles, and trying to make sure that the student experience is both clean and usable.

Learning a New System

And of course, there’s the learning curve. Even with a background in tech, getting to grips with a whole new interface has been a task in itself. Making changes at this level is difficult—but I’ve never doubted the importance of doing it right. We’re laying the foundations for something much better, and that makes the hard work worth it.

What We’re Aiming For

Our goal is clear: create a better course experience. That means faster access, easier navigation, cleaner design, and more consistency across our offerings. We’re not just porting courses over—we’re improving them as we go.

Progress So Far

So far, we’ve fully migrated 8 courses, and we’re pushing ahead with the others. I honestly couldn’t tell you how far along we are overall—every time we make progress, something new crops up to fix or improve. But we’re moving forward steadily.

Thanks for Your Patience

I want to take a moment to thank everyone who’s helping out. Whether it’s testing, offering feedback, or just being patient while we work—it means a lot. If you’ve messaged and not had a reply straight away, I apologise. We’re understandably stretched right now and doing our best to juggle everything.

What’s Next for Students

Just to reassure anyone wondering about their account—student migration hasn’t started yet. We’ll only begin moving user accounts over once the course migration is complete and tested. This way, we can minimise disruption and make sure everything is stable before making the switch.

Expect a Few Bugs

The first draft of the new site will probably have some bugs—we’re realistic about that—but the aim is for any issues to be surface level and quickly fixed.
